How to Store Food In Mylar Bags

Last week I was sealing some food in Mylar bags and I was trying to remember if I’d ever made a post on this topic. I searched my own site and was surprised to find I hadn’t. (Although I did share some good videos about it in the posts Using Buckets for Food Storage and Sealing Mylar Bags.) Many preppers have different methods and preferences when using Mylar bags, and I’ll mention those, but in this post I’m going to walk you through what I did.

Step 1: Buy some long-term foods. If you can afford to buy food from distributors like Nitro-Pak, good for you. They have some great MRE’s and freeze-dried food which of course is pretty easy to prepare. But frankly, most of us (myself included) are better off going to Costco, Sam’s Club, or Walmart when stocking up on food. Sometimes you can even find great deals at dollar stores or your local grocery store. I do most of my shopping at Winn-Dixie and they often have buy one, get one deals. Last week I saw some rice so I snatched it up. Here are some pics of things I got at Winn-Dixie and Sam’s Club.

BTW, those instant hashbrowns are great. You just let them sit in hot water for 15 minutes, then throw them on a greased skillet over a fire for five minutes. Deelish. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Bugging Out Really Worth It?

Is Bugging Out Really Worth It?A lot of hardcore preppers insist that you have a bug out bag and a bug out location. Many of them say that when the SHTF, the cities will burn to the ground. And even if they don’t burn, the people living in them will starve to death or be murdered by looters.

Personally, I don’t think things will ever get quite that bad. (The only exception would be if there were an EMP blast or a nuclear war, but that is beyond the scope of this site.) The government has contingency plans for natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. I’m not saying they’ll do a great job (for example, FEMA after hurricane Katrina), but usually order will be restored in a few days, long before people start killing each other for food. There are also contingency plans for an economic collapse. There have been hundreds of examples of economic collapse in history, and it almost never happens overnight. Things can get really bad, but at the same time the descent is slow enough to where the government and the people can adapt and avoid absolute chaos. Read the rest of this entry »

Where You Should Store Your Food

Before starting your food storage program, you should figure out where you’re going to keep all that food. The conditions need to be right, there needs to be plenty of room, and it needs to be in a convenient place. Look around your home and find a place that you can dedicate to food storage. Be creative. You might need to move things around.

The Right Conditions

  1. Temperature. Ideally, you want to keep your food between 40 and 60 degrees F. Keeping your thermostat at 60 degrees or less could be a strain on your electric bill (and your skin) in the summer, but keep it as cool as you can afford or tolerate. You’ll also want the temperature to stay constant. Temperature variations can ruin the nutritional value of your food. Read the rest of this entry »

Last Minute Preps

Last Minute PrepsImagine the shit has hit the fan and you didn’t bother to prepare. A pandemic is spreading across the country like a wildfire, maybe an earthquake has knocked out the power and water. Perhaps there’s been a terrorist attack and part of your town is in flames, or hyperinflation has hit a critical point where prices are rising throughout the day. If something like this occurs, you’ll have to run to the nearest grocery store and get what you can, while you can.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get everything you need to last for several months, but it might still be possible to get enough to ride out whatever disaster has occurred. Pull the kids out of school and keep your cell phone Read the rest of this entry »

5 Places Not To Be During Hyperinflation

The dollar collapse is coming soon. It will be the largest inflationary disaster in history. In fact, it will be the first economic disaster to affect every single person in the world. Since the dollar is the reserve currency of the world, it’s collapse will mean global hyperinflation. No one knows just how painful it will be, but we can agree it will be very bad. If you’re stocked up on enough supplies, you might be able to stay home and ride it out until order is restored. But if you are in any of these five places, you should move now.
