Are you one of the many preppers who plan on bugging out to the woods after the SHTF? I’ve heard many people say they plan on doing this (both in person and online), and most of them think they will hunt for food while they’re at it. This always makes me cringe.
First of all, if everyone is bugging out to the woods at the same time, there’s not going to be enough wild game for everybody. Forests will be picked clean in no time. And secondly, half the people who plan on hunting have never actually skinned, butchered, and processed their own meat before. I guess they think they’ll figure it out later, but that would be a big mistake.
Butchering an animal is not as simple as it sounds. If you don’t know how to do it properly, you risk contaminating the meat with bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract. And that’s just one of several things that could go wrong. Now admittedly, I am not an expert at this (I’ve only assisted other people), which is why I’m going to share an article by someone else.
I found this article on Survivopedia. The author, Bill White, explains how to clean an animal (remove the organs), how to skin an animal (gut hooks and bone saws are helpful), and he covers birds, small game, and deer. He also explains how to cook and smoke the meat, and how to make beef jerky. There’s a ton of great info here, so check it out.
