Although America is supposed to be the “land of the free,” if you’re trying to live off the grid, then it doesn’t feel very free. In recent years, state and federal governments have attempted to ban people from camping on their own land, fine them for growing gardens in their front yards, and even jail them for collecting rainwater on their own property.
If you want to be as free as possible, you can’t just live in America; you have to live in the right state. So which states are the freest when it comes to off-grid living? The CATO Institute did a study in order to find out.
