Are you as ready as you think you are? You might be prepared to ride out a disaster in your home, but what if you have to evacuate? Be honest with yourself. How quickly could you get yourself and your family on the road and out of town?
The only way to answer this question is to practice. Pretend an unexpected disaster has struck, gather your things, and see how long it takes you to hit the road. Of course, every bug out scenario is different. In some cases, you might have several hours to bug out. In other cases, you might only have a few minutes. What would you do with those minutes?
In this article, Graywolf Survival has an interesting approach to this problem that I’d never heard before. He suggests breaking up your bug out plan into three categories: 5 seconds, 5 minutes, and 5 hours. Figure out what you would do in all three scenarios, and practice.
